In 2023, Distinguished Humphrey alumnu Rani Yan Yan received the Secretary's Award for Global Anti-Racism Champions from U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken. Rani Yan Yan is an indigenous human rights defender and women’s rights activist who has brought international attention to the plight of her community in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region of Bangladesh. As a leader from the Chakma Circle, Yan Yan actively advocates for vulnerable populations facing government-sponsored discrimination, land grabbing, violence and the adverse effects of climate change. As a direct result of Yan Yan’s activism, the international community has gained new awareness of the violence committed against indigenous peoples’ communities and minority groups in Bangladesh. Rani was a Humphrey Fellow from 2022-2023 at Duke University.

In 2021, Humphrey alumna Hajia Alima Mahama was appointed as the first woman Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to the United States. She previously served two terms in Parliament and in various government ministry positions, including as Minister of State for Local Government and Rural Development and as Minister of State for Women’s and Children’s Affairs. Her passion for gender equality and, development and growth of children has been evident throughout her career and more especially in her contribution to the passage of the Domestic Violence Act and the Human Trafficking Act, as well as ratification of related conventions at the level of the African Union and the United Nations. H.E. Mahama was a Humphrey Fellow at Rutgers University in 1999-2000.

In 2022, Humphrey alumnus Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work in poverty alleviation. As Founder of Akhuwat, Dr. Saqib established Pakistan’s largest first-of-its kind interest-free microfinance organization in 2001. Presently, Akhuwat has distributed 4.2 million interest-free loans, helping three million families with a remarkable 99.9% loan repayment rate. In addition, Akhuwat has a health services program that helps hundreds of thousands of patients, have distributed more than three million clothes to people in need through a clothing bank, and leads a program that provides financial, health, and psycho-social services for Pakistan's transgender community. Dr. Saqib was a Humphrey Fellow from 1993-1994 at American University.

Public Policy Analysis and Public Administration
Humphrey Fellows work on an array of critical public policy and administrative topics in various disciplines across local, regional, and national levels. They address issues including regional economic and workforce development planning, domestic and foreign development policies, and financial management in public and non-profit organizations.
Technology Policy and Management
Humphrey Fellows serve as technology educators, network administrators, engineers, and urban planners. They formulate technology policy and manage scientific and technological change at local, regional, and national levels.
Human Resource Management
Humphrey Fellows serve in positions related to human resources that advance institutional change, setting personnel policies and procedures in their organizations and communities.
